Maybe once I actually get my #vaporware socnet project going, I’ll have a reason to learn it better. Use a CLI client and a bouncer, use slash commands, spin up an eggdrop. Learn to kick and ban troublesome users.
For now, Quassel and a #Matrix bridge are good enough. In conversation from nu.federati.net permalink -

There is a new version now, but so far, “install failed” on both of the devices I attempted to update.
This is yet another hurdle that #Matrix has to get over. Besides all the problems people are noting with the server implementation (Synapse), the clients seem to be low quality.
I no longer have any contacts where we can 1:1 over Matrix. They’ve all been driven off by bugs 🐛 ... in particular, the end-to-end encryption gave lots of “unable to decrypt this message”. I’m told that has ended, but there’s no one to test it with.
I currently use Matrix mostly for the bridges to #IRC.In conversation from nu.federati.net permalink -

The current #Riot-Android client may not get that, as RiotX-Android is meant to replace it.

But from what I understand, the #Matrix founders had been involved in #SIP (which had a rivalry versus #XMPP thanks to its "SIMPLE" messaging protocol ... only recently has the SIP organization decided to work on interop with the XSF). (1) migratable accounts
(2) move from client-server to mostly peer-to-peer, so homeserver membership optional
(3) turn off matrix.org (which currently hosts 35% of Matrix users) homeserver

N-5-O-body (n5admin@n5.federati.net)'s status on Monday, 13-Jan-2020 20:08:30 UTC N-5-O-body Personally, I never liked #IRC, so I quickly stopped using it back in the late #1990s. Sometime in the 2000s or 2010s, I started to use #SILC (through their CLI client based on the "irssi" IRC client), and only through SILC did I learn to tolerate IRC. Today, I almost always use IRC through bridges to #Matrix or #XMPP MUCs.
And even though I usually have multiple terminal windows open on my desktop, I only use GUI IRC clients. In conversation from n5.federati.net permalink -

For example, addressing. Let’s say I set up #Synapse at matrix\.federati\.net. The “#members” room would be at #members:matrix.federati.net, correct? And my account would be @lnxw48a1:matrix.federati.net? I’m not even sure. Do their URLs start with “matrix:”? Or maybe “matrix://“?
And that’s the problem. They intentionally chose something so alien-looking that it confuses people. In conversation from nu.federati.net permalink -
