@eludom 3/ So centralization is causing important details about a project to be locked up at #github -- bad enough -- but also forcing humans to context switch between local code and remote website, and fragmenting discussion into n different places. The only reason people haven't risen up against the high barriers to entry at #Github is because "everyone" already has a #Github account, right?
I'd like to move my code off #Github. But to where? #Gitea, #Gitlab, etc. are basically things in the same area. #Git itself is decentralized, and I hate to centralize it again. Yet people seem to have forgotten git send-email. #sourcehut looks somewhat interesting. Are there other takes on #Git collaboration that make efforts to preserve decentralization?
Friendly reminder: While #Codeberg is for everyone, not everyone is on Codeberg.
Tying collaboration to your projects to a platform raises the barrier for fly-by contributors. Whether you are on Codeberg, #GitHub, some #GitLab or #Gitea instances, we always recommend to prominently state multiple contact information, so people can also send bug reports and patches, e.g. via E-Mail.
@gitea ooh yesss how awesome! Congratulations everyone! I'm so excited I'm going to install #Gitea right away even though it's not got federation yet 😅
(I've been vaguely thinking of moving some stuff of :gitlab: #Gitlab, which is already migrated from :github: #GitHub. I guess now's the trigger 🔫 )
Side note to @fosstodon: does this call for a new emoji?
Going to have to put something up there for job-hunting purposes. I'll use it as a backup or something, so I've got content there, but whatever I do is not entirely dependent on their goodwill. We all know that we shouldn't willingly give corporations the ability to control us, but I'm hoping to be one of the few that acts on this knowledge.
@geniusmusing I’ll read the article later, but does this mean that #Microsoft is going to assist in overturning the vastly unjust #DMCA law? I mean, #GitHub is significant to developers, but to the outside world, they’re invisible. But if Microsoft as a whole says “DMCA is unfair, unjust, and hurting copyright and patent dependent industries by enabling cartels like #RIAA and #MPAA to freely trample on smaller, independent content producers and the people who just want to enjoy music and movies”, some of those empty-headed congressionals might listen.
I'm not big on #GitHub (even before Microsoft bought them), but my impression of DMCA is that GH did not have any say about closing repositories.
The claims in the DMCA request may have been garbage, but #Microsoft GitHub doesn't get to choose. They have to disable access to those repos or be liable for any further damages the copyright abusing #RIAA claimed.
I don't know where I found this link, but it's important news: #Apple's main #CUPS repository (on #GitHub) has very few commits since the main dev left late last year. There's a new CUPS fork at OpenPrinting.org
For example, RagTag\.io was to provide hashtagging for the network. There were statistics hubs, a firehose, a find-your-friends service, and more. The repositories are still there, mostly without being touched for 6-8 years, but the primary service point (such as ofirehose\.com and ragtag\.io are almost universally gone, replaced by domain squatters and the like).
@moonman My feelings exactly. I didn't have anything original there ( #Github ) in the first place, but I had patches for others' projects. I removed everything several years ago. Yes, a couple of potential employers have passed on hiring me because my GH account was empty. I just (A) don't want to support centralized facilities like GH or SourceForge any more, when you can host your own #git / #hg / #darcs / fossil; and (B) as my role at work has changed more toward user support, I'm not creating or using such patches any more, so if someone found and started using them, they'd be potentially doing it wrong / importing security holes.
( For a while, I had my own #Fossil repo with some original stuff, but thanks to hosting changes are $EMPLOYER work scheduling / hotel Internet, that's all gone, too. )
@grote I'm interested in providing polylines for routes in #Transportr, how should I do that? Recent commit messages don't reveal it despite 2.0.5 release saying "polylines for more networks". .] I've been mapping and updating the OSM data for public transport v2 in Umeå, Sweden at least.
@musicman @strypey I don't know if #Github sold themselves because they were running out of money, but just a few years ago, freedom-focused projects that did not use GH because of its proprietary secret sauce faced a rushed move when a less-proprietary competitor called #Gitorious closed. Many of these other platforms were not well-known until that event.
