    1. Why Did Mozilla Remove XUL Add-ons?
      During the past few days, I’ve been chatting with Firefox users, trying to separate fact from rumor regarding the consequences of the August 2020 Mozilla layoffs. One of the topics that came back a few times was the removal of XUL-based add-ons during the move to Firefox Quantum. I was very surprised to see that, years after it happened, some community members still felt hurt by this choice. And then, as someone pointed out on reddit, I realized that we still haven’t taken the time to explain in-depth why we had no choice but to remove XUL-based add-ons. So, if you’re ready for a dive into some of the internals of add-ons and Gecko, I’d like to take this opportunity to try and give you a bit more detail.

    Hearing some rumors that #Firefox 79.0 upgrade hoses history and settings. I thought that might have been my case, but then discovered that most of my $HOME directory's contents are gone.

    Appears Kwallet, Firefox, Palemoon, Thunderbird are all affected. Sylpheed, Claws-Mail

    I think I’ve written this before, but back in their heyday, #Mozilla was flying high, driven by the funds coming from its search deal with #Google. When the GOOG started to cut back and then launched a competing browser, Moz panicked (rightly) because all the high-sounding promises they made were predicated on this huge level of funding that went away.

    Now that #Firefox holds a small sliver of its former market share, and nearly all of its competitors build upon Google’s code (which forked from Apple’s code, which itself was forked from KDE’s code), the going is rough and getting rougher.

    Everyone keeps telling me there’s no download needed for #Zoom, but #MSEdge needed a download in order to handle the meeting. (I did not join a previous Zoom meeting my family held in mid-May because it needed a plugin downloaded for #Firefox.) Today, my co-worker S refused to join because of the plugin download for #MSIE 11.

    I've long had my desired and most-used browsers ( #Firefox and #Palemoon ) pinned. I don't need to pin a browser that I only use as a local PDF reader.

    Well, apparently, you always could, but now audio will work.

    Also, the meeting organizer must click a button to generate a web link or you’ll be taken to a page telling you to install their desktop program or a browser plugin.

      A quirk of Mozilla’s Firefox browser is that it lets you join a Zoom call via the web, no separate app downloaded needed, but you can’t say anything on the call. Or at least, you couldn’t before the latest update.

    @mangeurdenuage I don't remember #Firefox taking a psrticulsrly long time to compile, but #Chromium did seem to take a while. Nothing compares to the week I once spent waiting for #Ruby to compile on a box with a really slow Celeron, 128MiB of RAM.

    There are more plugins with my Windows version.

    We actually support #Firefox at some level (Gold, Silver, or Bronze), so might be a good thing for me to figure out, lol.

    probably, but...I use #Firefox on Windows without issue. Same amount of RAM on the two machines.

    @ivesen It also happens in #Palemoon (which is derived from #Firefox, but presumably has different code since the fork). Pleroma FE performance got drastically worse a few months ago, so wherever the bug came from, it only started triggering relatively recently.
