At work, I try really hard to direct my project purely on logic and persuasion. And when I cannot persuade, I often concede and let people run with decisions I believe are wrong. But there are times when I feel I can't afford to indulge everyone's autonomy and I have to say, sorry, but I am the lead, and this is my call to make. I try to do it as gently and respectfully as I can, but it's essentially a violent act that hurts everyone involved, and it leaves me wondering later how to mitigate the damage, and whether there might have been a better way to handle it. I'm very familiar with the struggle against authority, but far less familiar or comfortable with the difficulties of wielding authority.
