Being completely dependent on laptop Dennis atm, I *really* need good backup - and I don't want to wait until I've set up my own everything on my Linode. Besides, I'd prefer to have *two* backups of everything. So I'm researching solutions and finding not much that ticks all the boxes, or even the most important ones. After studying a lot of options, currently only SpiderOakONE looks really good ("zero knowledge" storage in their cloud, with local strong encryption, not on-the-server encryption where the provider has the key...). Big but: no mobile backup and no mobile sync (only mobile access) - and those are bits I also need. Found Bittorrent Sync which uses peer-to-peer technology (no cloud!) to keep files and folders in sync. Available for many platforms, including Linux, Android and even my NAS (Asustor); installed on Dennis and my phone now (but not configured yet). So that's syncing sorted, too. 1/2

Now I need to look at mobile backup, and then set it all up so it's as automated and transparent as possible. At least, being in Groningen, I've been able to really concentrate on this and make real progress. BTW, 'Bittorrent Sync' is now called "Resilio". 2/2

@mk One downside: BT Sync is proprietary. Better stick with https://syncthing.net

@nakal thanks, I'll have a look at that, too. Does that have an Asustor app as well?
-
@marcus um, what exactly is the "it" you refer to (that is not secure)? btsync, syncthing, Spideroak? Something else?
-
@nakal Hmm, I just found this page: http://support.asustor.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/116/0/what-network-ports-are-used-by-asustor-services - that suggests syncthing is available for Asustor - in what version I don't know, Asustor tends to be a bit late in providing newer versions (apps have to be compiled specially for the platform, and you cannot simply install from source). I'll have to take a closer look! :)

@marcus thanks, that's good to know (I'll hve a really good look): I definitely need secure: I need sync partly for business use, so I need to be extra-careful.

@marcus I feel another headache coming up... or maybe I just need more !coffee :-/

@marcus @nobse I was told it's not secure - and I had a really close look at the description (next to that for BT Sync). I could not find anything that suggested it might be insecure. I also searched for "reshare" and could not find anything. Besides it doesn't sound like something that could play a role in a syncing-and-backup system. No one else would ever have access to the synced files or backups - so where does "the reshare functionality" actually come in? What's not secure? "If you share something with another person, you loose control over re-sharing." Yes, obviously. But why woudl I do that in the context of a backup-and-sync system? Why on earth would I share my backups? --- Both BT sync and syncthing are available on the ASUSTOR, and I intend to test both. If one crashes and the other does not - easy decision. Anything else? I can't foresee, I can only test and see what happens.
