In America, tipping is expected. Personally, I tip in cash so they can choose to report it as income or not. I tip because of social pressure. Tipping is wrong, especially percentage based tipping, because the price of a meal has little to do with the quality of service. A $10 entree generally takes as much effort to serve as a $50 entree. If you're ever in Berkeley, enjoy a meal at http://www.chezpanisse.com/contact/directions You won't have to tip. @lnxw48
There is indeed something degrading about workers relying on tips for income. The trouble is that they *do* rely on tips for income and employers take advantage of the existence of tipping to pay less than a living wage. And to pay a worker less than a living wage is to suggest that they are worth less than their lives which is particularly degrading. @zoowar @lnxw48 @mbjunior
