“Ruby Bridges was the first African-American child to desegregate an all-white elementary school in the US South. On her first day at William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans in 1960, six-year-old Bridges was met by a vicious mob and had to be escorted to school by US Marshals. The harassment continued throughout the year and Bridges was taught in a class by herself due to a boycott by the other children’s parents.
