we've talked a lot on the show about crowdfunding to pay for studio time. We've interviewed Patreon, IndieGoGo, @snowdriftcoop, and Kickstarter. We've also talked about it directly with several musicians. Getting paid and !cc are definitely not mutual exclusive. Maybe you should point her friends to our interviews with Chris Zabriskie and Kevin MacLeod, both of which get paid and use *CC BY*. Of course, their stuff is mostly instrumental, which is different, but David Rovics is a full time musician releasing under CC BY-NC-SA. Amanda Palmer also uses that license.
I'm not glad people still think this, but I am glad I hear about it if it is going to happen, because with so much CC music out there, I still wonder sometimes if what we are doing is important. Clearly, it is.

@cmhobbs Funny though that your wife's friends care for how she makes decisions on her own work. Maybe someone should go to their homes and tell them without being asked how to cook their meals.
