Great progress today: connected cable radio, tidied up cables in the meter cabinet (what do you call that in English?), connected the cable modem, and checked that I have a Wifi signal 'n' everywhere in the house (could be improved with a repeater on the top floor) and that I have cabled *very* fast Internet in three rooms. Exploring the modem's website: it seems to have a lot of options (though lacking a few niceties I have on the FritzBox in Amsterdam). Not the fastest possible Wifi but possibly that can be improved with a separate router. #house #internet

@bobjonkman2 thanks, I think 'utility closet' was the term I was thinking of. Sounds like it's all very inefficient with different utilities coming in at different spots! There's no actual basement here, but a 'crawling space' that provides access when needed; it may be waterlogged, but when the house is built properly the floor, or bottom, or both, will be insulated. Waterlogged ground doesn't stop a basement being built: it just needs to be built watertight! Normally there is either a crawling space or a basement (but in soil with a high water level building a basement is obviously more expensive).

@bobjonkman2 in my utility closet there's water, gas, electricity, cable (tv/radio, possibly also Internet and/or phone) and phone (ordinary fixed-line phone, which also may carry Internet and digital tv/radio). I opted for cable internet here as it can be almost 10x faster than what the copper phone line here can carry. No glass fiber in this area yet though it's being rolled out slowly, starting with new developments - which means that for speed I have only one provider to choose from. :(
