Well, at least some countries are waking up: India has banned Facebook's Free Basics service https://quitter.se/url/1336875
- @mcscx@quitter.se repeated this.

@hosh probably not for net neutrality but similar to Erdogan who banned Twitter & Youtube

@mcscx in Egypt, I've read, you need a license to open a web site. In India, I suspect that national pride or unknown commercial considerations are at the heart of it. Meanwhile in Israel, there may be a crackdown by the military censor on websites and FB pages http://bit.ly/1nYg8mp

The Register, in "Are Indians too stupid to be trusted with free internet?" (http://bit.ly/20FzFJk) has a different take on this, partly blaming Google: "The campaign to deprive the poor of rudimentary free data access is driven through funded groups such as Access Now, which in turn is funded by a Facebook rival, Google. Google has its own preferred model for getting the poor online, which in turn requires turning them into Matrix-style data batteries, much as we are here in the West. It’s up to you which model you think is superior; we merely note that while Facebook (to our knowledge) isn’t trying to ban Google’s model, Google is fighting to ban Facebook’s model. In India, it has just notched up another victory." But I'll look for what the Indian press are saying.
