Trying to figure out why Darktable will no longer start, I started it from the command line and get: "darktable: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcolordprivate.so.2: undefined symbol: cmsGetContextUserData". Everything's installed, up to date - for Debian: it's actually quite a bit behind. I'm really really handicapped without Darktable - so I guess I'll have to go back to installing from source. :( It's not as though I have plenty of time for that... better get some sleep first though. good night (etc.) !tzaf !fediverse !fediverso !photography #software

@andresinmp The night was too short but I dove right in this morning after I got up. At least with a clear head - good thing too, since I'm running into problems - mostly solved (missing but optional modules that I'e now installed) but finally running into te same problem (at build time) that Debian's Darktable version was having at runtime. So now I'm looking if/how I can disable an option - which involves learning a bit of learning about how cmake works :-/ - compiling a non-trivial program is such fun! NOT. (I went through countless hoops with Hugin before). #coffee now, then continue trouble shooting, I think I can probably get it to work...

@andresinmp There are several applications with broadly similar function. I looked at three a few years ago: DigiKam [1], Darktable [2] and LightZone [3]. It's a long time ago now but I found DigiKam lacking (if I remember correctly, not enough functionality and no 16-bit support - GIMP also suffers from the latter), but both Darktable and LightZone have full 16-bit support and are quite powerful - there is overlap but with different implementation, and in some things they complement each other. Both have a pretty steep learning curve, too - but worth it. I have both installed, but I find I mostly use Darktable. --- [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigiKam [2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darktable - see also http://digital-photography-school.com/darktable-vs-lightroom-does-it-measure-up/ [3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LightZone

@tobias there IS no system update - for now Debian is stuck at 1.4.2 (with fatal bug) and current version of Darktable is 1.6.8. There is no .deb package on their site (so they must depend on some Debian maintainer/packager), so the only option left is to compile from source. I'm at the configure step now, and need to test whether I can get rid of the module that (in the current version, too) causes the problem. Just having a little break now...

@tobias well, after what I went throug with Hugin (at the time Debian was waaay beind with its version), I've learned to expect these kinds of problems: graphics manipulation software like this is higly complex and depends on numerous libraries which all have to play together nicely. I sympathize with packagers for the distros! But this time I have no choice if I want to use the program at all (I DO!) because Debian's latest version simply won't start.
-
@tobias ...and apart from a minor update for Ubuntuzilla Firefox, my Debian is fully up-to-date.
-
@tobias if it's merely 'behind' there would only a serious problem (for this kind of software) is it doesn't support new RAW format or newer lenses that you use, and that the actual release version does support. But it's much more serious when the program simply craps out with a fatal error!
-
@tobias phew! I actually managed to tweak a file correctly and then build (and install) darktable. :) Now I must run out for some errands, before I test
-
@tobias @andresinmp HURRAY! I have Darktable properly working, picking up program data (and updating my Sony RX-100 lens data - very important)! There's a small grumble about one module that cannot be loaded but that's nothing to do with the previous problems - which I seem to have worked around correctly. So here's a BIG screenshot of Darktable 1.6.8 in action. http://oracle.skilledtests.com/attachment/81098

@andresinmp thanks! I'm happily going through Darktable right now and looking up documentations and tutorials: I'm finding it can actually do a *lot* more than I thought it could. I'm eager to start editing my photos from SAIL Amsterdam, but I want to get a bit more practice before I start on those... !photography #software #darktable - the excellent manual can be found here: https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/index.html.php (and is available as a PDF as well).

@andresinmp and here is a nice walkthroug for Darktable "E198: Darktable revisited" by 'Meet the GIMP!' channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LpHGIwnm98 !photography #software #darktable
