@streondj Btw, with "CCTV plug" you mean an ordinary DC barrel? I.e. the cylindrical part of this one: http://www.fiveten-tech.com/UploadFiles/20111025155621344.jpg
In that case, yeah I have quite a lot of them, but with cables that are supposed to deal with 10A of current or more (at least 2.5mm²) fitting them to an ordinary, tiny DC barrel isn't optimal.
However, I do have several of those connectors (male and female) and have already started making circuit boards with 12V regulators, 12->5V DC-DC converters etc. will have such plugs. So every "cigarette adapter" plug will just lead to multiple further connectors for smaller connectors and possibly lower voltages. (DC plugs, USB outlets or whatever)

12V'ifying the household. I'll make it prettier later. A solar panel + battery array gets and stores my power. Should be enough for laptop + some lights. Maybe networking gear too.

@mmn This is by the kitchen window. Preliminary outlet connected ;) https://social.umeahackerspace.se/attachment/29009

I'll have my irc #RaspberryPi/#BeagleBoard running on this if I have enough power. .)

@moeeee I have a better supply of cheap/leftover cigarette plug adapters and sockets than British plugs though. That's my simple reason to use them so far. But thanks for the great tip!
@mikael who is building a 24V server basement uses some Anderson plugs which can be rated up to 40A or more I believe! (but I of course don't have the cabling for that anyway .P)

@streondj Yeah, but can I send 5-10A through those plugs safely? :)
