     @windigo ok I can report partial success. The no-indent trick worked perfectly (woohoo!) but the dropcaps didn't. They looked right in Calibre preview pane but not in actual Kindle. Thanks so much for this tip!

     @windigo the sibling CSS worked nicely for the dropcap on epub format, viewing w/Marvin app on my iPad. must be something about the Kindle device that didn't like that CSS technique.
