     Stuck in grub rescue mode. Unable to locate any partitions. Guess that means I've done something horribly wrong.

     @galoisghost you can download a bootable Grub Rescue cd/floppy/image with autodetection. I think it's called SuperGrubDisk.

     @galoisghost maybe as soon as you get your GNU/Linux system started up with SuperGrubDisk you can fix the original config & do update-grub
