This photo of a supernova appearing in spiral galaxy M101 is a gem for at least two reasons:
- it is beautiful and it won a section of the Wikimedia Science Photo Contest
and
- it was taken by Serhiy Khomenko and it shows how there are people in #Ukraine, who despite the war and alarms and power cuts were able to even care so deeply about the universe in May 2023, and they still do now 💪

1. Author: Serhiy Khomenko English: Messier 101, galaxy, supernova The pictures were taken on March 18, 2023 and May 21, 2023. The first is south of the city of Berezhany in the Ternopil region, and the second is in the city itself. Sky Watcher Newton system telescope D=254mm, F=1200mm, Baader Planetarium Mark III coma corrector. Equatorial mounting: SW NEQ-6. Camera Nikon D7200, ISO 5000, exp=30s for each frame. In the first case, 59 such personnel were made, in the second - 151. The hardware base in both cases was completely the same. But the shooting conditions are significantly different both geographically, which affected the difference in the lighting of the sky, and climatically, when the March night was a little frosty, and the May night was clearly warm, which had a considerable effect on the thermal noise of the matrix.
