Writer and illustrator Edward Gorey was born #OTD in 1925.
Not in the drafty old rooms of an Edwardian manse somewhere out on the moors, but in Chicago, of all places!

Gorey often published stories with tongue-in-cheek anagrammatic pen names, like “Ogdred Weary” or “Groeda Weyrd.”
Perhaps my favorite Gorey-esque fact about Edward Gorey is this: "writer and artist Edward Gorey" is an anagram of "great weird story and weird art."
@mcnees I got an EG anthology for my birthday a few years back. This is my favorite panel:
@acm_redfox A thread!
@mcnees He has some kind of house on Cape Cod that's preserved as a minimalist museum.
@mcnees I used to have lunch with Edward Gorey at his favorite diner, Jack's Outback. He was a gloriously funny sublime DL old queen who made his art with game shows and soap operas blaring on TV in an attic full of cats. I miss him. (Sorry, I don't know the photographer.)
@stevesilberman In Yarmouth? My brother in law grew up around the corner; it was their family spot. He says Gorey was always there, and was always nice to the kids.
@stevesilberman We happened upon his house once! https://mastodon.social/@mcnees/109909173484369123
