   Just saw a wonderful thread where half the people couldn't imagine how "criss cross applesauce" could possibly rhyme and the other half were wondering how on Earth you'd say it so it *wouldn't* rhyme.

   Apparently this is a rhyme that kindergarteners in the cot-caught-merger parts of the US get told when it's time to sit cross-legged on the floor and have a little gathering.

     @roadriverrail "Loss" rhymes with "cross". And "paws" (or "pause") rhymes with "sauce".

     @clacke I do have a Southern accent, but not a particularly heavy one. I'm curious how you pronounce those words. To me, it's "kris krawse appl sawse"

     @clacke The rhyme came after my time, I think, because my teachers all used the problematic phrase "Indian-style" to describe that way of sitting.

     That said, "criss cross applesauce" was a common phrase in patty-cake games when I was a kid, and it very much rhymes in my head. I'm trying to imagine how to pronounce it so it doesn't rhyme and I can't even imagine it.

     @notclacke @clacke That's awesome that you did that. It's weird because they sound like they rhyme to me, just with a different vowel! Brains are weird.

     @clacke I think what you're saying is that the short o is something you both hear and say more distinctly? For me "Pause the sauce cause we lost the cross" has such strong internal rhyme that it sounds like something from Eminem.
