The first message between two computers on ARPANET was sent #OTD in 1969. The “LO” of “LOGIN” was successfully transmitted and then one of the systems crashed.

They re-sent the “LOGIN” message an hour later, establishing a connection between UCLA and Stanford.
So technically the first three characters transmitted over what would become the internet were “LOL.”

In a much later experiment, a group I was working with were wanting an easy way to pick our message out of a hex data dump to see if we were communicating. We chose the message:
DEAD BEEF CAFE
As it is composed only of hex bytes A thru F and is easy to recognize in a hex data dump.
