   Tried two different cards, each in two different Japanese ATMs that supposedly supported those two networks. They were declined.

   My cards don't have any international restrictions as far as I'm aware, worked well in Europe.

   Now I'm afraid that a third ATM might eat my cards.

   Hope the restaurant accepts some card for these noodles. (supposedly it does)

     There are like 15 random people here enjoying some tea and the view of Osaka castle, and two of them except kid and me are also Swedish.

     Ok, noodles place accepted the card and I bought cash for HKD at the forex (at 1–2% worse than bank rate, of course).

     Then I tried to buy train tickets, but couldn't figure out how to make the machine take the cash, so ended up buying from a human who just laughed.

     "Machine difficult? Haha!"

     16 years ago the post office worked well for MasterCard, will try that next with ... a third card.

     Machine less difficult today, managed to buy travel blip cards from it. I think the machine yesterday was just being weird.

     Tried an ATM that literally said International ATM, and the post office ATM that even had me push an on-screen button "Internationally issued card". Still no good.

     Luckily all businesses accept cards these days, so more a mystery than a problem.

     @luis_in_brief The second ATM was grouped together with the 7-11 ATMs, but I think it wasn't really one of them, it looked different.

     @clacke When visiting a decade ago we had excellent ATM luck at 7-11 after all else failed
