Well, my work Headset can have ANC on and apply hear-through. I find it rather useful as it filters noise and I can set the dB level of surrounding noises.
I agree, if you want total peace, it doesn't make sense. But if you want quiet and hearing people talking to you, I think it is an awesome feature.

ANC _and_ passthru at the same time? Aren't they mutually exclusive functions? My Soundcore Q30s can do one or the other, and really well.

Noise cancelling removes noise from outside by taking an audio feed from the outside, and inverting it into the headphones.
Listen through does exactly the same but doesnt invert it, so you actually hear what's outside.
Genuinely, I cannot grok how both can be active at the same time.

I have both turned on and hear through level is at the lowest. The best of it is, that I can hear my voice, what makes ANC less creepy. I use Jabra Evolve2 85. Maybe there is a different between headsets (with microphones) and headphones (without microphones)?

That's a fair point. I hadn't considered filtering of specific frequency ranges.

I agree. However, Noise cancellation doesn't need to cancel everything, as noise is not everything.
Human voice has a specific frequency band and one could damp the range above and below for example. One could also use microprocessors for active filtering of whatever is considered to be noise. And so on...
