Arthur Conan Doyle is best known for The Detective, of course, but he also wrote many non-Holmes stories.
A lesser-known fave is “The Doctors of Hoyland,” in which a man can’t wrap his head around a woman being a better doctor than him. All he can think to do is propose marriage, and she laughs him off to go do more Science. It holds up!

That story was written in 1894, a few years after he gave up his small and unsuccessful medical practice in London. It was almost certainly informed by the attitudes of his colleagues.
@mcnees @teledyn Huhn. This fellow really does look like he could be cast as Watson, doesn't he.
@jonberger @Theorem_Poem There were some episodes / storylines in that show which I really liked. Possibly because Johnny Lee Miller is just so good.
@Theorem_Poem @mcnees They certainly didn't make that mistake in "Elementary." I shall say no more, but they took The Woman in a very interesting direction. I love "Elementary," and thought that "Sherlock" jumped the shark badly after about two seasons.
@mcnees The one detail I loathed in the BBC adaption of Sherlock Holmes is that they made Irene Adler, THE Woman, a damsel in distress who eventually needed to be rescued. Arthur Conan Doyle had no problem having his hero defeated by a woman, nerdbros in the 21st century cannot bear it.
