   Happy 33rd birthday to the Hubble Space Telescope, launched onboard space shuttle Discovery (STS-31) #OTD in 1990.

   The 2023 anniversary image is the nebula NGC 1333, a star forming region about 970 light years away in the constellation Perseus.

     Somehow I missed this a few years ago, but the Hubble team put together this portal that lets you enter your birthday (month and day, not year) and see a Hubble image captured on that date.

     @failedLyndonLaRouchite I don't know the last part of that story! My old college professor, Gerald Cecil, was one of the leads on the corrective optics.

     you should tell the kids about the story of how PE f*cked up the mirror, and an old time telescope maker built a test unit from tape and sealing wax and said you have spherical aberration and PE laughed at the old guy
