   Making pixel art that is animated only through color palette cycling and is this beautiful should basically be illegal.
   
   Seize the Day was a calendar program made by in 1994 by Buena Vista software. [ . . . ] These images were static bitmaps, but by changing color values, they appear animated.

     (Unfortunately their SSL cert seems to have some issues.)
