   Anyone have recommendations for solid, reliable Linux-compaitible laptops? It's been a long time since I bought a new one but want to get one for my son. I'm aware of Dell's Ubuntu offerings and System76 but both are kinda pricey.

     @jonkulp my current laptop is a System76 Galago. It's been a fairly solid machine, but for the price, I absolutely expect a CAPS-LOCK indicator light.

     @jonkulp: I bought a framwork this year, and I really love it. Good hardware, good design, and good ethos.

     I've been running Fedora on it, and it "just works" more than any Windows computer I've ever had.

     But, they too can be on the pricey end.

     @x1101 ok I really like the look of the framework option. Upgradeable memory and main drives, option to buy w/o OS. More affordable than dell or system76. Ima show it to my son. Thanks!

     @lnxw37b4 @x1101 it's funny, I didn't even notice the different aspect ratio of the screen until x1101 mentioned it. Hope it's ok with my son. I love what I see in about every other respect. you ever see a laptop advertisement where the first picture they show is someone disassembling it? Amazing.

     @jonkulp @x1101 I looked at frame.work earlier this year. I liked much of what I saw, but did not end up buying. Maybe I'll look again.

     @h4890 thanks all who have made suggestions. I got him a framework laptop and it's great. You have to install the ram, ssd, and accessory cards yourself, then install the OS (we did Ubuntu). The WiFi didn't work until we ran updates after the initial installation (had to use an old USB Wi-Fi dongle to get online) but after running updates and rebooting all worked just fine.

     This is a very honorable quest! So far I've found two options:

     System76 and Purism.

     Purism I think is too expensive, and when it comes to System76 I'm waiting for an upgrade to the lemur.

     As a travelling salesman, light weight and massive battery capacity is what I am looking for (besides linux support of course).

     @jonkulp I am very happy with the Microsoft Surface range. I am mainly using a SurfaceBook 2, and I have a small Surface Go for travelling. Absolutely superb experience.

     @h4890 I also found out you can buy your own ssd and ram elsewhere and buy the laptop without them, saving quite a bit of money. It's a wonderful machine for people who like to upgrade and repair themselves.
