      In 1949 an engineer at Bell Labs built three music boxes that could electronically produce five distinct notes. One box was used to demonstrate Bell Labs’ recently invented point-contact transistor. The other two went to the transistor’s co-inventors, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain.
