Non-violence is a red herring. When the world is violent to you, being non-violent doesn't not prevent violence.
It simply guarantees the outcome of the violence imposed upon you.
Violence and non-violence both are tools, to be applied when strategically useful.

Arundhati Roy in "Walking with the Comrades"? talks about how non-violence might not work without and audience. People in the jungles getting massacred in their villages might not have the option... Norman Finkelstein's talk about Gandhi on DN! has stayed with me for years.
