Boom, unapologetic transphobic disgust as a supposedly comedic element.
And then again. And again. And then it's a major plot point.
Wow, the 90s huh. So much achieved, such a long road left to go.-

In the aughts we were still somewhat learning that you didn't have to be fabulous to be gay and you didn't have to be gay just because you were fabulous. -

Tho it was riffing on/exactly copying a scene from The Crying Game, which was aggressively bad and serious. Ace at least has a good first two acts, and the sequel's OK.

I mixed it up with Boys Don't Cry, which is about a trans man and the abuse he suffered.
But The Crying Game with the stuff you described also went on to win a Best Screenplay Oscar.
So maybe these two films are pretty good checkpoints on the changes in society. -

The girl is a psychopath, leads the boy on in classic homophobic "trap" story, and then the boy throws up excessively and cries because he saw a weiner. Then he makes up because he's also a psychopath. The reviewers of the time thought that was fine because they'd also throw up.
Meanwhile, over here watching John Waters movies and listening to "Walk on the Wild Side", Boy George, & Annie Lennox, I was baffled by the reaction.
