   That’s the understanding I’ve gathered as well, which was a major motivator behind my question.

   Haven’t heard of alonetone before and I’ll look into it! I subconsciously excluded YouTube because I was thinking audio only, but speaking of, how about PeerTube? I’ve found many artists on https://diode.zone.

     I'm involved in a number of music-making communities (February Album Writing Month and 50/90, specifically).

     These days SoundCloud is a fairly poor experience for artists and listeners both. Most folks I know are mostly migrating away from it.

     Some folks use https://alonetone.com

     Others just use Bandcamp, YouTube, Internet Archive, or self-host.

     As an artist and listener both, I prefer almost anything over SoundCloud.
