   The type of guy who jumps into an IRC channel to tell people their project has useless documentation, gets upset that people thinks that's not very nice behavior, then drops into random other project's channel to gripe about it and starts insulting people when nobody responds.

     I have a solution for that.
     Hiring freelance programmers as contractors to make certain changes to the Foss program in question.

     @clacke and unless you know how to code, you *are* powerless in that situation. as powerless as with a paid product but now you don't even have the right to complain.

     @clacke but most users feel like customers so they have the expectations of paying customers, i.e. mostly powerless to make changes, so all they can do is complain.

     @clacke the issue is that most FOSS projects have no "customer service", because no product was purchased, and "management" (the maintainer) doesn't have to listen directly to customers, because he's not getting paid for that.

     @Moon Dunking on the other project may or may not have been justified, I didn't see it, and we all get frustrated sometimes and may not always channel it properly, but the attention-seeking and abuse in an unrelated channel was just broken behavior.
     
     Judging from the latter behavior I expect the original complaint was ... less than constructive.
