Matrix might suit your needs, it's very popular on here. It's decentralised, free open source software.

XMPP is another alternative, but it's more messenger-like and less slack-like.
I prefer XMPP, but I don't want slack type features.

As a Twitch streamer, I have a small Discord community, and seeing how much they've monetized it since Discord launched got me looking for alternatives that hopefully don't involve going back to the stone age of IRC.
I'm hopefully assuming Linux and Android support are a thing given the open source nature, yes?
