     One thing I've noticed poking around is that newer clients seem to not have much support (if any) for local email storage. The assumption is that you'll always have IMAP connection or similar and that you won't ever need to archive items (and have access to items) that are no longer stored on a server. In this world, import/export is totally a server to server thing and storage space on a server is not a problem, and you never need to access your email without an internet connection. :/
