It is an outdoor ice rink with three sheets, for public use. There is a spicket which is used to flood the area with water. Obviously, a cold (freezing) day is required to form the required ice. On the day the photo was taken it was too mild.
Curling pitches?
@fitheach this reminded me of all the 'curling rinks' that you see in old old maps. I keep meaning to find the modern sites and see how they are

So curling, at least free outdoor curling, is not very common in Scotland then?
I've never seen it played, but I assume it's similar to EissstockschieΓen (literal translation: ice stock shooting) which is played in Bavaria (haven't seen this either, though).
