     nobody's perfect, but some people have fewer flaws than others, and we absolutely don't want to believe that's true, even though it has to be true. there is no evidence that the sum of all strengths and weaknesses is equal in all people. on the whole, we're sore losers, so we don't want anybody to be better than us, because this would make us feel inferior.

     when a good-hearted intelligent successful attractive character is in a story, they are usually the hero protagonist, and we all like them, because we can imagine ourselves in his/her place.

     when they exist in real life, they're often envied, and many would love to see them fail. "aha! they're inadequate, just like me!"
