tbh, I like tech stuff and I am the goto person in my family for all things computer, but here I feel like a total noob. When I set up my first Nextcloud on a Raspberry Pi a few months ago, I was nervous like hell... I admire all the knowledgeable geeky, hacky, crypto, security and what else people. I wonder how they feel and are exasperated about people using dangerous, privacy-invading software all over the place when it gives even me a headache even though I understand only half of it.

Most people are completely disempowered and have succumbed to generations of learned helplessness. Don't underestimate your 'vanguardness' :)

I a flattered to be in a vanguard! π πI found this page recently suggesting open source alternatives for specific closed source to you
I clicked around a bit and already found stuff to use.

Do everything open and decentralised digital spaces first, and then, if resources allow, address those in centralised proprietary spaces.
If we all do this - because, let's face it, those of us in the Fedisphere are clearly the vanguard of digital tech makers and users globally - the rest of the world will eventually follow because (and I'm confident of this) they can't continue to function as they are without our help. .
