By audiophile standard, the best Hi-Fi in the world is a reference sine wave generator. Real audiophiles should listen to nothing but the 2 kHz oscillator Jim Williams built before his death in 2011 for testing a 18-bit ADC. It only plays a single tone, but they can enjoy the sound of that 0.00031% Total Harmonic Distortion! https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/technical-articles/ubm_edn_20110811%2018bit%20adcs%20ad%20free.pdf #electronics

I'd go as far as saying the "distortion artist" and "transparent reproduction" are the two major groups in the Hi-Fi audio world. Before DSP, attempting different amplifiers circuits were basically the only way to adjust the sound. And it's perfectly valid if one perfers tube distortion.
Unfortunately the paradox is that it doesn't have a clear boundary between the two groups, and we get all sorts of nonsense such as combining different transparent devices to "change" the (imagined or real) sound. And if it produces a effect, probably due to additional distortion, audiophiles will claim it have better "sound quality", whatever it means...

1 ppm feels kind of high for an oscillator. these days we're talking about ppbs -

Meanwhile the audiophiles: plugging random fake 1970s op-amps onto the 8 pin DIP sockets of their amplifiers
