Iβm disappointed to already be seeing backlash against Russians who are not the commander in chief of any army. BCβs state liquor stores (and ISTR a few others) have made a public show of dropping Russian products, and I just read a super gross article in which a retired NHL star ranted about how if the league doesnβt suspend all Russian players itβs complicit in the war.

Eldan Goldenberg (eldang@weirder.earth)'s status on Friday, 04-Mar-2022 19:11:39 UTC Eldan Goldenberg I fail to see how any of this hurts Putin. Meanwhile it can put people who have no responsibility for the war out of jobs, and Iβm worried about where this goes. Weβre heading into day 5 of the war and the appetite for collective punishment is already this strong. Is βdonβt punish people for the actions of a far away homelandβ another lesson we all failed to learn from the 20th century?

Eldan Goldenberg (eldang@weirder.earth)'s status on Friday, 04-Mar-2022 19:12:00 UTC Eldan Goldenberg We went to a Ukraine vigil at the Provincial Legislature today. Iβm glad that all the critical signs I saw there named Putin personally. Though I was there in solidarity with Ukrainians first and foremost, I did also see it as solidarity with all the people in Russia whoβve taken risks we didnβt have to, to protest the war in their own country.

Have in mind that this doesnt only hurt them, it also hurts us. Thats how all wars go, even economically. There are no winners. Just people who lose less, and people who lose everything.Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π likes this. -

That's why they chose to instead freeze assets for Putin, Lavrov and a bunch of other politicians and/or billionaires in Russia and Belarus, and to block specific banks from SWIFT.
Too bad Germany is still allowing itself to buy gas. -
Eldan Goldenberg (eldang@weirder.earth)'s status on Saturday, 05-Mar-2022 02:43:30 UTC Eldan Goldenberg @oleksiy Iβm all for the actually targeted and coordinated measures, like freezing assets, replacing gas supplies, moving prestige events, and locking the country out of SWIFT. But product bans on a whim of management arenβt that.

Oleksiy πΊπ¦ (oleksiy@weirder.earth)'s status on Saturday, 05-Mar-2022 02:43:41 UTC Oleksiy πΊπ¦ @eldang there is a reasoning for all the boycotting and blocking. Russia lives in informational vacuum with very strong internal propaganda. Doing stuff like this helps some people realise that something is really wrong with their government. Of course it's not most effective method, but it's something
