   A sign that news desks are staffed by 20-somethings is that absolutely nobody in media seems to remember Second Life as they breathlessly report on how the Metaverse will change everything.

   Spoiler: The Metaverse will suck because it is a bad idea. It always was.

     @tsturm Well, no. SL was awesome until Linden started cracking down on porn and gambling in adult-rated areas, which drove out 80% of the playerbase. Fucking puritanical bankers are the problem.

     A Metaverse could still be awesome again, but not one owned by Facebook.

     @tsturm There's a ton of other uses, the porn & gambling funded amazing nightclubs, builds of complex games and "models" of places and things, all sorts of weird art displays & sculpture.

     It's not great for corporate meetings, because corp meetings suck; they're no good IRL either.

     And Minecraft's cute but it's really shitty for building anything adult, has no multimedia input.

     Mozilla Hubs & Spoke are OK, not as good, don't scale to 100s-1000s of users, but at least they're free-ish.

     @mdhughes A Metaverse/SL is a good idea for porn and gambling, but unusable for anything else. Have 3D meetings with avatars? Seriously? There is no there there.

     If I want to have fun in a free no-rules 3D environment, there is Minecraft.
