One thing that's been stuck in my mind for a bit was that there was a possibility I could have had a more stable job, but I felt blocked by a simple reason: I'm disabled.

Chris π± (brainblasted@jade.moe)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jan-2022 07:22:08 UTC Chris π± Part of the reason I let the opportunity go by was a feeling that even if I got the job, I couldn't be sure how they'd react to my disability affecting my job.

Be (be@fosstodon.org)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jan-2022 07:22:08 UTC Be @brainblasted Coding under strict time deadlines is silly... if that's what they value in applicants, I would expect the company to force workers to meet bullshit deadlines that don't actually matter for anything.

Chris π± (brainblasted@jade.moe)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jan-2022 07:22:09 UTC Chris π± Even if I still have the chance, I don't know if I want to go through all the hoops again, because this wasn't the only one. I practically had to write an essay prior to this stage.

Chris π± (brainblasted@jade.moe)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jan-2022 07:22:09 UTC Chris π± For now at least, I have a contract with another company that was super easy to get started with. And I feel like contracting works well with other aspects of my disability, since my hours are flexible. Still, I feel like I missed a big opportunity due to a mix of my own anxiety and the lack of accommodations.

Chris π± (brainblasted@jade.moe)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jan-2022 07:22:11 UTC Chris π± It seemed like things were going well and the recruiters were interested in me, but then something big came up: I had to take two aptitude quizzes, and both quizzes were timed and prioritized speed over anything else.

Chris π± (brainblasted@jade.moe)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jan-2022 07:22:11 UTC Chris π± Processing speed is one of the places I'm hit by my disability hard. In school I'd do well on tests, but I needed double time on them. Literally - if a test was supposed to be taken within one hour, I often took two.

Lea de Groot (leadegroot@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jan-2022 07:22:30 UTC Lea de Groot @be @brainblasted but... a lot of places (not all) do work with stupid deadlines for projects that have no need of same in reality - what are called deathmarches in the gaming industry come to mind. I don't think its unreasonable to turn down a job on the assumption that the interview process reflects the job - why else would they run it that way?
