     @rysiek @ghostdancer There is so much cultural osmosis that it's almost like I'd seen it already!
     
     It is a good movie, I enjoyed it and would recommend anyone to watch it. It was exactly what I expected, but now I have better context for all the classic lines and situations.

     The movie gets even better if you read some of the lore around it. I was kind of watching it with phone in hand for all the actors I recognized etc.
     
     The most amazing thing is that they had this one guy cast for the singer at first, but another guy had a talk with his real-life mafioso to make them put him in the movie, and they cast him as the singer instead.
     
     And then the singer character in the movie did the exact same thing. Poetry.
     
     I do not know if anyone put any dead animals in Coppola's bed or not.

     @clacke Glad you enjoyed it. Although it's considered a classic you might not like it, and that's ok, I have friends who think it's meh or just another movie. @rysiek

     It's cliché, and not just because it created or vitalized the genre and then gets accused of being a clone of itself, which happens to classics sometimes.
     
     Coppola called the story "pretty cheap stuff" already at the time and wouldn't direct it at first, until he realized he needed the money.
     
     But it's damn well produced and directed pulp. There was going to be mafia movies. I'm glad we have this one.

     Pacino is magnificent. I don't know why Brando was praised, probably because he's Brando and maybe people weren't used to voice acting at the time.

     There are fewer or no direct references to the second film in the mainstream meme stash, so I'm looking forward to watching that one without already knowing most of what will happen the second a new scene starts.

     @clacke Lots of people think the second one is better, but as always that is debatable, really good acting not only by the main characters. Maybe not as mememable as the first. @rysiek

     More lore: There was an American-Italian community organization that was consulted. They asked them to remove the two references to "mafia" in the film.
     
     The head of that organization, who thought that pinning the mafia label on Italian Americans was insensitive ... was mafia.
