Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 16:40:02 UTC Jon Kulp I'm testing every ebook reader app I can find on Android and iOS and building a chart showing compatibility with my counterpoint book (epub format), which throws unusual challenges at ereaders with its embedded audio players and rich web of navigation links. Top marks so far for iBooks, Marvin, and (nearly as good) Kobo apps on iOS, while Android's Kobo app and the rather humbly-named "Ebook Reader" are the only contenders. All others have problems with the audio or navigation or both. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 16:42:21 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp have you tried FBReader? That's what I use. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 16:53:23 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius of course, I've used it forever but it has no audio support and very squirrelly image behavior too. Navigation is great, super fast, but no audio means can't take advantage of the biggest killer feature of the book. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 16:54:28 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Ah, you need audio... didn't think of that :-) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 17:03:39 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius yep otherwise FBreader is my favorite reader for Android b/c of simplicity, amazing speed and integration with Gutenberg.org -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 17:19:31 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp I also like that fact that it's FLOSS :-) There's also Cool Reader but I haven't used that. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 17:40:12 UTC Jon Kulp @mcnalu @sazius I just tried Cool Reader and it doesn't do audio or allow for clicking nav links in the text. Can't use it. Would be ok for just reading a story. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 17:47:31 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp @mcnalu OK, well I'll stick to FBReader then. Would be nice if some FLOSS reader supported audio, though. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 18:07:08 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius well Monocle (what im using for the embedded reader on my website) is FOSS and it supports audio, does most of what I need, but people seem to hate javascript so clearly it's not the one either. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 18:11:15 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Well, I guess you're bound to need JavaScript if you do something advanced and interactive like that for a web page? That's much better than Flash or Java, IMHO :-) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 18:21:38 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius yeah, but even Monocle isn't very friendly to certain browsers. Never have full compatibility! -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 18:27:30 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Actually with Firefox I'm experiencing some problems with the audio-player. When I click play it also switches the page :-P -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 18:43:53 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius exactly. That's the main quirk with FF, and it sometimes renders pages funny. Chrome seems to work without any issues, both on desktop OS and on Android. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 18:45:48 UTC Jon Kulp @mcnalu can you export your comments as a text file or via email or anything? -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Dec-2014 19:07:54 UTC Jon Kulp @mcnalu I bought Moon+ Pro reader b/c easy to export notes and highlights. On my Kindle I can grab em from a plain text file when attached to laptop by usb. -

sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Dec-2014 09:31:39 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Very nice chart! Would it be possible to also indicate FLOSS apps vs free cost apps? (At least for some people this makes a difference :-) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Dec-2014 11:46:43 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius possible, sure, but almost certainly irrelevant to audience for this book. I'll look it up, then put a little * or † with footnote indicating this, plus a link to def of FOSS haha! -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Dec-2014 12:08:42 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius Geez, FBreader may be the only one! -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Dec-2014 14:01:11 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Cool Reader is definitely FLOSS too since it's in the F-droid store. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Dec-2014 14:55:54 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius ok I'll add that too -

Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Monday, 05-Jan-2015 13:47:58 UTC Jon Kulp @mcnalu it renders the audio players but won't play the audio, at least not on my phone. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Monday, 05-Jan-2015 13:53:31 UTC Jon Kulp @jonkulp @mcnalu actually CR doesn't even render the players, that must have been one of the other dozen ebook apps I tried. -
