want to read a bit before sleeping? better read a paperback or a paper magazine: "Ebooks at night won’t help you sleep tight, US study finds" http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/dec/23/ebooks-affect-sleep-alertness-harvard-study
-
@mk But I gather, "old fashioned" ebooks, with no back light should be OK?
-
@sazius with no backlight? maybe...
-
@sazius It seems to be the bluish light that is disrupting the production of melatonin - which is what makes you sleepy. Not the first time I'm reading about this either. So if there's no backlight, what light is there? It may still be disruptive
-
@mk from the BBC article: "Original Kindle readers do not emit light so should be fine, say experts." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-30574260
-
@sazius I'm assuming yes. It's all this crazy bright artificial light we're jamming in our eyes 24/7.
-
@mk I don't have a Kindle myself since I'm opposed to DRM, but I have another old fashioned ereader without any light. Only light is from your bedside lamp, same as if you were reading a normal book.
-
@mk @johnnynull Another thing that affects my sleeping with computers and tablets is multi-tasking and constant stimuli. This is why I try to turn off my computers ~1h before I go to bed. Old "dumb" ereaders are OK, though since they don't have any networking :-)
-
@sazius "should be" sounds like they didn't actually test it. I'm sceptical: even a little light (of the 'right' color) may be enough to cause the brain to produce less melatonin.
-
@mk but they don't emit any light at all - only reflect from their surface, like paper books do
-
@sazius I don't understand why people want the constant interruptions of 'networking' telling them there is mail, a message, etc. Why not just turn off the alerts? Then you can concentrate.
-
@mk I already turn off all alerts, but then I can't stop myself from being compulsive and check it anyway :-) So better turn everything off and enjoying some offline time :-)
-
@sazius I only check mail when I'm really waiting for something, otherwise I try to check once a day and sometimes don't even get around to that. Statusnet is not "important" but generally more of an entertainment thing. Take a break, check SN! :) Saying good night is also a way to stop (unless my eye catches something I want to react to, but that is rare).
-
@sazius @mk I won't be putting my Kindle down. I fall asleep faster than ever.
-
@jonkulp @sazius @mk I use twighlight on my tablet/phone and redshift on the computers so that …
-
@mk I guess mail isn't such a big problem either. It's just all the other things, on a computer it's too easy to multi-task with various things and that's cognitively stressful :-)
-
@sazius @mk An excellent routine.
-
@jonkulp I don't have a problem falling asleep either - if anything, I fall asleep too early!
-
@mk same here! LOL we're #old (at least I am...)
-
@sazius Yeah I'm doing that all wrong.
-
@theru Thanks for the tip! Using f.lux on my Windows work computer, installed Twilight on phone now.
