@hj @lain The most astonishing one is how people went from e-mail to facebook.

every time someone has an alternative to an existing social network style service, you get the 'network effect' response. Of course in a sense it's trivially true that more popular networks will have a better chance at getting users, but somehow, people when from myspace to facebook to instagram, from icq to msn to facebook messenger to whatsapp, from sourceforge to github. it's not impossible and not even unlikely.

@lain @hj I think the trick there was to capture a specific cohort that didn't actually have a strong network effect within e-mail, and make them use facebook *first*. Then build from there.
Obviously they did have e-mail as they needed it to register, but presumably they didn't use it much for talking to their friends.
