   - History sync is available on Prosody and Ejabberd on server side and on Conversation, Dino and Gajim on client side. The clients and servers recommended for Jabber (and prosody is really simple to
   install and manage)
   - Bridge is available and used lot in Jabber. I personally recommend Biboumi as IRC gateway

     About #Slack I want to mention that my favourite Free Software projects, #Guix and #Guile, both use mailing lists and (logged) IRC channels

     I even linked some old email in those mailing lists in my blog

     Also I suggest rreading this document about FLOSS projects using walled gardens comms systems (thank you to @clacke for the link)

     I can't understand why some foss projects don't use foss and open communication systems.

     For mailing lists you have the amazing Hyper Kitty and if you find IRC too old (and freenode too centralized) you have Jabber.

     @postroutine @vascorsd @catonano And Matrix. The free software project I'm involved in uses Matrix and Telegram.
     
     Telegram because it's ubiquitous in the cryptocurrency world for some reason. I'm not spending effort to convince them otherwise at the moment, but for my own parts, I will promote Matrix and the racket-lang mailing list.

     ive found that when onboarding new floss contributors, theres a lot less friction with matrix. they can use matrix.org, no diy, nice web client reqs no install, cross platform mobile client lets non full time volunteers keep up...

     jabber in my exp takes too much explanation and client config, i lose them

     You know, that's a really good question. And I think there is no obvious good technical answer.
     
     I've heard that Matrix should be easier to implement and that it gels better with a web mindset and environment.
     
     But then everybody is still running on Synapse, and alternative implementations are on hold because the real spec is "what Synapse does" and the formal spec is really behind.
     
     I think the real, practical, pragmatic answer is: Because Riot.
     
     There is no free software decentralized IM web UI that beats Riot. Just go to the URL, don't even register, go to the room, join, boom, you're in. And the most important controls are obvious to a casual computer user. And the more advanced ones are obvious to a geek.
     
     I recommend Riot to people as the best web IRC client for freenode. And it doubles as a bouncer too, so without hassle you've got what Quassel would do for you as well (if you register).

     basically each adressed by an XEP that was in wide use when they wrote the criticisms.
     
     Perhaps Riot could have been a killer XMPP frontend and the IRC[0] bridge an XMPP transport.
     
     But I'm afraid the way it happened means Matrix in less than a year leapfrogged near two decades of XMPP web UI and mobile UI development, and transport development.

     @mairin @vascorsd @catonano @postroutine That's one of the concrete advantages that Matrix people put forward -- that its scope is narrower.
     
     It's primarily about human-human interaction in a chat room, so the base protocol is less flexible -- a client or server is supposed to support a wide range of features to be compliant with the base protocol.

     Is it used as an XMPP transport, or does it bridge between an MUC room and an IRC channel?
