   80% of what I want from a "social network" I had 10 years ago. Mastodon barely gives me 40%, but at least it's better than Twitter and Facebooks 10%.

   I am so fucking tired of open alternatives "copying" the designs optimised for capitalism, and just saying "this is what we want, just freeeee".

   This whole model of everything centered around a constantly updating stream of "content" with no regard of topic or context is designed for and by capitalists to maximize surveillance potential.

     @zatnosk Blame and strong words aside, I do agree with the advice that blindly copying features that weren't necessarily invented for the benefit of the user is something to watch out for.

     @zatnosk @bjoern I'm not sure chronological uncategorized streams of small posts are necessarily in and of themselves OMG CAPITALISM, rather than an emulation of a busy room.
     
     Originally, Twitter was nothing more than a proprietary and centralized way of replacing RSS feeds. The only capitalist intervention there is breaking standards and avoiding federation -- supplying convenience and immediacy over flexibility and control can be a valid choice for free software too.

     @zatnosk @clacke In Twitter's early days, users did have long and meaningful conversations. Because the "firehose" was available to everyone, random people could join in. This was before the spammers and the marketers and all the political drama, and long before Twitter started trying to make money.
     
     There were similar microblogging sites that were even better for conversations, including Jaiku, Pownce, and Identi.ca.
     
     Twitter's main issue (from the standpoint of having meaningful conversations) is that it is too large. Too many people using a single organization's centralized site means that organization becomes too powerful relative to its userbase.
