   This is a really important time to push free and open source alternatives to #Patreon! I've considered using @Liberapay, but was afraid I had to use Patreon to get the network effect.

   Please tell people about #Liberapay, post about it on Reddit (r/patreon), vote it up on Alternativeto, etc https://alternativeto.net/software/liberapay/

   Please boost! This kind of opportunity to topple a near monopoly with FLOSS does not come often!
   Are there other FLOSS #crowdfunding platforms?

     Saw the mail in my inbox now. The meat of it:

     > Aside from Patreon’s existing 5% fee, a creator’s income on Patreon varies because of processing fees every month. They can lose anywhere from 7-15% of their earnings to these fees.

     > Starting December 18th, we will apply a new service fee of 2.9% + $0.35 that patrons will pay for each individual pledge. This service fee helps keep Patreon up and running.
     
     I dunno. Unless there's any fudging the numbers here, it sounds like they are just making the fees more visible.
     
     Of course, the effect may be that making a $1 pledge will be less attractive, and patrons may be focusing on giving larger sums to fewer creators. But it sounds like the reason that wasn't happening already was that the old system hid the true fees.

     But, yeah, @Liberapay really needs to work on new features, like reward tires and non-anonymous donations for those who want that!

     I just wish CoinBase would start accepting ETH, ETC, DASH and LTC. That would put some fire under people's asses.

     That article* on how Bitcoin has too many middlemen has many good points, but forgets that the middlemen are the reason Bitcoin is where it is today.
