     Are you aware that the packaging and isolation system you are describing is almost exactly https://gnu.org/s/guix/ and https://nixos.org/nix/ and that they have 13 years of history thinking about and solving adjacent problems?
     
     Try them out, they're awesome.

     @wolf480pl No unionfs, correct, but profiles that are symlink forests that achieve something very similar.

     @wolf480pl Depends what you mean by stateful. The state is the symlink to the immutable pile of symlinks that describe your current desired profile state.
