Getting a critical mass of people to "buy in" and cooperate is incredibly valuable. A lot of the value of successful apps isn't that they are better than alternatives, but that they successfully achieved buy-in.
It's probably easier for creators to form groups with patreon's help (or someone else's) than to do it from scratch.
