@tuttle Because they're both made of cheese and as we know, large pieces of cheese repells gravity and thus accelerates away from the Earth until it gets far enough away and the repulsive force dies of. Then they both hang there.
The variation in distance (so the moon can pass before the sun) is because someone has nibbled on the moon (you can see the bite marks on a clear night) and thus the moon has slightly less repulsive force and hangs just a tiny bit closer to the sun. This is what causes the ring around the eclipse.

than the sun*

@tuttle Maybe you could explain why humans can look at the moon but not at the sun? I'm thinking it's because of air pollution and since the moon is slightly lighter from nibbling, it has become somewhat dirtier than the glaring sun.

@zoowar Some argue the holes (I argue nibblings) are because the moon is swiss cheese, but we will never know because we can't go there as it's so high up no ladder will reach it.
While we're on the topic, I just want to say it's obvious the supposed cheese landing was faked. The ground they walk on isn't even cheese coloured!!!
I know this because the secret location where they filmed the cheese landing is just outside of Umeå at geo:64.272992,21.04885 near these cheese slicers: https://social.umeahackerspace.se/attachment/204537
