@moonman That's the part I like about him. And I like his anti-fragility meme. And I like his views on skin in the game and that he actually founded a company on that premise.
But he seems to be making a business out of saying that everyone in every field is wrong, in particular the ones using statistics, and I'm not sure he's better than all those people just because he was right about the 2008 crisis.

@moonman Rediscovered this tab. So YOU'RE my excuse for having wasted too much time reading about Taleb last night.

@clacke I think he's wrong on the details about GMOs but is right in the general thrust that GMO pushers ignore multiplicative risk involved and that it's bad to have your food supply designed by a corporate oligopoly that historically has not been trustworthy.

@clacke His beef with Pinker seems to primarily be that Pinker (representative of science in general) wants to extrapolate from rare data, on the premise that something is better than nothing, and Taleb says it's not because you just can't draw conclusions from whatever survived. I fall heavily on Taleb's side on this but admit there's probably systemic reasons why it's better for science to make a bunch of shitty extrapolations and then work on un-shitting them than to just refrain from studying things with sparse data.

@moonman @clacke Literally every food item is genetically-engineered and has been artificially selected since we started cultivating lands.
