Christmas Personified as a Catgirl (moonman@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 20-May-2017 02:56:04 UTC Christmas Personified as a Catgirl @xj9 @mono @clacke the social sciences reject rigor as a colonialist imposition on lived truths of minorities and marginalized peoples. And I am not making this up. google "autoethnography" - Hallå Kitteh repeated this.

I'd hazard a guess that both have good points. -

Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 20-May-2017 02:06:54 UTC Hallå Kitteh @mono Correction: "stay in your ivory towers" links the other one in the sentence:
> Others assume that academics don’t want to leave their ivory towers because they are more comfortable there or might be afraid to speak in public. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 20-May-2017 02:16:12 UTC Hallå Kitteh @mono I read them both now and I'd say the first one is mostly right and the second one is mostly wrong. Saying this as neither scientist nor science communicator, of course. :-)
The first one says dip your toes in the public media and get yourself out there, it'll be fun. That's probably not true for everyone, but probably true for more people than the people themselves would think, and they're holding themselves back.
The second one seems to be saying, no use trying to get your work out because you never know what's going to be relevant in two decades. Let the others sort it out.
Meanwhile the others aren't sorting it out at all, they're just lisetning to smart press releases and hype, not to mention flat-out pseudo-science. If more of the slightly-closeted researchers would get their stuff out there, they could counter-balance this to some degree.
Marketing sucks, but it's important because The Others are doing marketing.
Also, I have the preconceived notion that public writing could help your academic writing and help you detect your own mumbo-jumbo. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 20-May-2017 02:24:51 UTC Hallå Kitteh @mono I'm very happy about the scientists who do both. They blog and they make sure to have friends in media who call on them to comment on science news. -
worst girl 🏴☠️ (xj9@sunshinegardens.org)'s status on Saturday, 20-May-2017 02:26:50 UTC worst girl 🏴☠️ @clacke @mono it appears to me that science has a pr problem. i've had a surprising number of conversations lately with people who thing science is nonsense. not, junk science, but the whole scientific method. i mean, a lot of this could be attributed to shitty education standards, but still. "truth seekers" rejecting science? how did science lose the image of pursuing truth and understanding?

Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 20-May-2017 02:36:11 UTC Hallå Kitteh @mono @xj9 That's also true for basic science, though. And basic science is important. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 20-May-2017 02:38:55 UTC Hallå Kitteh @xj9 @mono Explaining fundamental physics principles to a duck is a closeted research field of its own, with very few practical applications.
And the public isn't ready for commoner-digestible facts about duck physics communication. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 20-May-2017 02:40:41 UTC Hallå Kitteh @moonman @mono In Sweden I see the trend of having had one credible science journalist in the whole country, to having a handful. -
